Pastor Penny Cory

Pastor Penny

            Pastor Penny was appointed to Kilmarnock United Methodist Church as pastor in July of 2013. KUMC is her 6th appointment since she was ordained by the United Methodist Church in 1990. She is happy to share her gifts and talents in this wonderful church family and community. She has loved the Lord from an early age when she gave her heart to Jesus and asked Him to come into her heart, forgive her sins, and save her so that she knows that she has an eternal home in heaven waiting for her. 

         Pastor Penny is married to the Rev. Birt Cory, an ordained minister in the ECA (Evangelical Church Alliance). They were both widowed previously and were married in September of 2003. Together they have 3 sons: Joshua, Steven, and Alex. They also have two grandchildren: Josh Jr. and Emily. 

         Pastor Penny was raised on a farm in Charles City County on the Chickahominy River.  She enjoys playing the piano and guitar, reading, hiking, bird watching, and gardening. She and Birt have enjoyed volunteering in many churches and nursing homes here on the Northern Neck with their music ministry called P B & J Ministries (not Peanut Butter and Jelly, but Penny, Birt, & Jesus). In September of 2021, Birt was hired by KUMC as our Media Specialist to livestream our worship service, edit video, help set up Zoom meetings, coordinate and disseminate information to our congregation. He is also available for substitute preaching. 

         Pastor Penny, together with all the members of KUMC are committed to growing the Kingdom of God for the transformation of this community around Kilmarnock. If you do not have a church home, we hope that you will come and visit us at 89 E. Church Street, in Kilmarnock, VA.  There are many places of service here and we are just waiting for you!!!

  • Joanne Hinson

    Joanne Hinson has been our secretary here at KUMC for 17 years. She came to KUMC after a 22 year career in the travel industry. She was born and raised in Lancaster County. She lives in Kilmarnock with her husband, Alan, and their two dogs. They have two married daughters, Jessie and Taylor. Joanne enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.

    The church office is open Monday through Thursday, 10am to 2pm.

  • Wayne Hare

    Wayne Hare came to us as our Organist/Choir Director in September 2021.

    He is a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists. He started playing the organ in the United Methodist Church when he was 10 years old. He is an avid sailor and kayaker and loves the salt water!

  • Birt Cory

    Birt was hired by KUMC as our Media Specialist to livestream our worship service, edit video, help set up Zoom meetings, assist with the church sound systems, and coordinate information to our congregation. He previously worked for 18 years as an engineer in Chesapeake, Virginia.

    Birt enjoys music, plays multiple wind instruments, and sings bass in our choir. He has worked for 9 years for Rappahannock Community College teaching GED math and science classes.

  • Mary Lorenzino

    Mary has been our Children’s Director since 2014 and was hired as our Children’s Ministry Director in September 2021. Mary was born and raised in Kilmarnock and she grew up in KUMC. She is married to Kyle and they have two children, Audrey and Elliott. Mary has always enjoyed mission work, music, and working with our children. She loves to share Jesus’ love with all who attend!

  • Stan Becker

    Stan has been our custodian since July 2017. He is retired military. He and his wife, Rose, moved to the Northern Neck in June 2015. They are members of KUMC. Stan enjoys exercising at the local YMCA and playing Frisbee golf.
